Farmhouse

Our northern Michigan adventure

I have ZERO before photos of the second bedroom. Most likely because every time I entered that room, I got sea sick, from the unlevel floor!

When we toured the house, the room was being used as a kids room, with bunk beds and a dresser. Once we began work in the principal bedroom, this room became the paint room, for a short while, to paint interior doors and trim.

Layout Changes (recap from the last blog)

See the last blog for a detailed explanation of how we changed the layout upstairs. The door into the guest bedroom was now in a new location which gave us enough extra square footage in the room to fit a queen sized bed comfortably.

And the floor is now level! Here are some before pics during the floor leveling process.

Furniture

We purchased some inexpensive night stands from Amazon: Anbuy rattan nightstand set of two. I also had an old console cabinet from my piano studio in Waterford that would be repurposed. I painted all these pieces green (Behr, color- Pistachio).

We had a green chair and ottoman in our living room in Waterford. It's new home would now be in the guest bedroom as well.

When we moved into the house, there were two floating shelves in the dining room. I painted those the same color as the walls. We also purchased a shallow bench with a drawer, shelves and hooks. I painted the shelves and drawer the same color as the walls.

Preparing the Room

Andy had to cut out drywall in the room to rewire the outlets properly. He also added new insulation in those areas.

Then the drywall repairs began. And there was a lot of drywall to do. The ceiling would need a skim coat since it had a textured ceiling; we filled in holes where open electrical boxes were, as well as a new piece of drywall where we added square footage to the room, so we needed to go with a smooth ceiling. Andy used a roller to put the mud onto the ceiling. That technique worked rather well and made quick work of smoothing out the textured ceiling.

Once the primer was on the walls and ceiling, Andy installed the door jamb and casing.

Painting & Trim

The color of the walls and ceiling is Sherwin Williams Open Air.

Andy installed the baseboard in the room and casing around the window, all painted the same color as the walls. He also installed the repurposed floating shelves.

Flooring

First, we installed the underlayment: Sentinel quiet premium underlayment purchased at Floor & Decor

Next, the laminate flooring: AQUAGUARD Brookview Grey multi-length water resistant laminate, also purchased from Floor & Decor.

Finishing the Room

Shoe Moulding was the finishing touch for the room as well as some metal grates for the vents: Madelyn Carter Contemporary Empire style vent cover in matte black from Amazon

The Details

The theme of the room is Mackinac (Bridge/Island). We used to spend a few nights every year on the island. It holds a special place in our hearts. Now we can visit for a day trip! But there’s nothing like staying the night on the island and waking up to the clip clop of the horses.

All the Mackinac themed decor was purchased from Etsy.

Purchased from Wayfair…

  • Latitude Run: Accent table C-shaped
  • Mercury Row: Pariaman 60” floor lamp and matching metal desk lamp
  • Avendano comforter set and throw pillow
  • Wade Logan: bedside usb lamp set of 2
  • Etta Avenue: Rayne platform bed queen
  • The carpet squares were from my piano studio in Waterford: Flor Upcycle in Lime

The Final Reveal!

We love this room so much, we may have to move into it before allowing any guests to stay! 😀

See you next time!
